From STEM Champion to Mining Innovator: Meet Epiroc Scholarship Recipient Isobel Cubong

Epiroc ACS Women in STEM Scholarship recipient

As a second-year Mechanical Engineering student at Curtin University, Isobel is already proving that engineering is about more than solving technical challenges. From volunteering in remote communities and mentoring future STEM leaders to interning with Epiroc’s engineering team, she’s using every opportunity to create a positive impact.

A Passion for Engineering, People and Community

When she’s not studying mechanical engineering at Curtin University, you’ll likely find Isobel training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, volunteering with Engineers Without Borders, or out on the water as a crew member aboard the STS Leeuwin II (Australia’s largest sail-training tall ship).

It’s a busy schedule, but one driven by a clear purpose.

“I am passionate about championing STEM to girls and women through getting involved with community and sharing my love for engineering.”

From an early age, engineering seemed like a natural fit. Growing up in a family of civil engineers, she developed a love for problem solving and quickly immersed herself in STEM opportunities.

As a two-time F1 in Schools State Champion and participant in the National Youth Science Forum, Isobel knew engineering was her future. What she hadn’t yet discovered was where she wanted that future to take her.

Turning Point: Discovering Mining’s Impact

Everything changed during her first year at university while volunteering as a primary school tutor in Kalgoorlie and Marble Bar.

Seeing firsthand how mining supports jobs, infrastructure, education and opportunities in regional communities gave her a new perspective on the industry.

“Working in mining means supporting a platform that gives back to people through financial support, resources and future technologies.”

The experience helped her realise that mining isn’t just about extracting resources. It’s about creating opportunities, supporting communities, and enabling innovation.

More Than a Scholarship

Receiving the ACS Women in STEM Scholarship, sponsored by Epiroc, was a defining moment.

While the scholarship provides financial support, Isobel says the greatest impact has been something less tangible.

“The most important takeaway was feeling seen. That my individual efforts to expand my knowledge and share it with others are valued.”

The recognition reinforced her confidence and strengthened her belief that she could inspire other young women to pursue careers in STEM.

The scholarship has also helped fund future international exchange opportunities and allowed her to devote more time to volunteering and professional development.

Inspiring the Next Generation

One of the most rewarding outcomes of the scholarship has been the opportunity to connect with students considering STEM careers themselves.

Twice a year, Isobel helps host the ACS BiG Day In, a STEM careers event that attracts around 1,000 high school students.

For her, it’s a chance to share experiences, connect with future engineers and show young women what is possible. After all, she was once sitting exactly where they are.

Engineering Beyond the Classroom

Through her connection with Epiroc, Isobel was offered the opportunity to intern with the engineering team, giving her a firsthand look at how classroom theory translates into real-world applications.

“As my first role in industry, I’ve been able to apply my knowledge and passions into active projects making a difference.”

The experience has given her exposure to processes and practical applications that simply can’t be learned from textbooks.

Working within Epiroc’s Ground Engaging Tools (GET) business, she has also gained a new appreciation for the collaboration required to support mining operations.

One thing that surprised her most? Just how many people are involved in delivering a single product.

“From sales, engineering and manufacturing to customer service, everyone plays a role. It showed me there’s so much opportunity to innovate and grow the industry.”

Looking Ahead

For Isobel, the future is filled with possibilities.

She hopes to work on projects locally in Western Australia and internationally, continue learning from inspiring mentors, and help shape a mining industry that is safer, more sustainable and more inclusive.

What excites her most about a future with Epiroc is the opportunity to contribute to meaningful change.

“Working with Epiroc means collaborating with brilliant engineers globally and maximising positive impacts because of the scale of projects they are contributing to.”

Final Advice for Future Applicants

When asked what advice she would give students considering a scholarship opportunity, her answer is simple:

“Find what’s important to you and seek every opportunity that helps you exercise it. Applying for a scholarship shouldn’t feel like another task, but a summary of who you are and why you do it.”

And for young women considering a future in STEM?

“Engineers are change-makers. Be the change you want to see.”
